LAWRENCEBURG, Tennessee – It was a planned fight that drew several onlookers when one man was shot dead twice Tuesday night in Lawrenceburg.
Roy Joshua Smith, 19, was hit in chest and throat after he and another teenager met in a dimly lit park around 9:00 pm to settle differences on illegal drugs, Lawrenceburg Assistant Police Chief Darren Goolsby said.
Charged with first degree murder was Tristin Bush, 18 and being held without bill in Lawrence County Jail. Bush who lives on Wesley Chapel Road in Lawrenceburg was halted in Lewisburg shortly after the shooting now locked in Lawrence County Jail. Goolsby said several people gathered around Simms Street Memorial Park to witness a fight between the two teens. Investigators talked to witnesses throughout the day.
Police said the two men reportedly began fighting and Bush grabbed a .25-caliber handgun and fired at least two shots. The fight continued after the shooting, with Bush being knocked unconscious briefly.
Smith of Pond Field Road in Lawrence County was taken by his girlfriend from the park to Crockett Hospital, but died shortly after, Goolsby said.
The two were previously on the same school. Smith attended the school between 2006 and 2009. Bush attended the school from 2007 until he left in March 31, 2010, the school official said.
“Josh was a really good kid; he had a lot of good things going for him,” said Lawrence County head football coach David Marston. “It’s a tragic situation. ”Smith played running back and defensive back during his freshman and sophomore years at Lawrence County High School and transferred to Giles County High School.
Smith played for Giles County High School football team that won the state championship in 2009.
