BOCA RATON, Florida —
Police said a Pompano Beach man stole a 91-year-old woman’s wallet outside a Boca Raton shopping center and got away in a taxi cab.
The theft occurred Sunday morning in the parking lot of Fifth Avenue Shops.
Boca Raton police said the victim had just left Publix and was near her car when the suspect, later identified as Robert Adams, approached her and asked if she would give him a ride. After she refused, police said, Adams grabbed her wallet from her purse, ran through the parking lot and hailed a cab.
Police were later notified that a man matching the description of the thief had hailed a Yellow Cab in the area, and officers conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 95 near Hillsboro Boulevard.
Video from a police dashboard camera shows the suspect stepping out of the taxi with his hands in the air. After initially appearing to obey officers’ commands, the suspect can be seen running toward the police car while two officers have their weapons drawn. One of the officers then shoots the suspect with his Taser gun, and several other officers surround him and take him into custody.
Police said the victim identified Adams as the man who robbed her. Police said he later confessed to the robbery and said he wanted officers to shoot him. “Apparently he made a statement like that. He wanted the officers to shoot him. He was unarmed so they tased him,” said Officer Sandra Boonenberg.
