SACRAMENTO, California – A Sacramento State University student found mortally wounded near the UC Berkeley campus suffered head trauma, but an autopsy could not immediately determine whether he was the victim of a crime, police said Thursday.

Nicholas Bailey, 21, was found unconscious on the 2500 block of Haste Street shortly after 9 a.m. Friday, according to UC Berkeley police and his family. He was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where he was removed from life support Sunday, after organs were donated that helped save five lives, his family said.

Bailey suffered “blunt injuries to the head,” but what caused those injuries remains unknown, said UC Berkeley police Capt. Margo Bennett.

Bailey was last seen at about 1:30 a.m. Friday at Blakes on Telegraph, a popular restaurant and bar a block south of UC Berkeley, authorities said. He had gone to Berkeley on Thursday night with a friend.

The friend reported that the two had left Blakes and that Bailey had told him to wait near the victim’s Toyota Camry while Bailey walked a woman to her car, the victim’s family said.

Bailey graduated from Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward and was to have entered his senior year at Sacramento State, where he was studying criminal justice. He planned to attend law school after graduating.

His family believes Bailey was attacked and is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to whoever is responsible. Friends and relatives plan to pass out flyers near Blakes.

“He was a mild-mannered kid. He wasn’t the kind of kid that would bother anyone,” said his father, Paul Bailey, 57. “It was unnecessary. He was a great kid.”

Bailey’s funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sunset View Mortuary and Cemetery, 101 Colusa Ave. in El Cerrito.

Anyone with information is asked to call UC Berkeley police at (510) 642-6760 or Bay Area Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
