Bronx teen died before he arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound

July 7th, 2010 - Comments »

NEW YORK, New York — A Bronx teen was shot in the head Tuesday and died before he could get to the hospital – just one block away, police said.

Cops are still searching for a motive and suspects in the murder of Mavon Chapman, 19, gunned down at E. 149th St. and Morris Ave. in Mott Haven at 4 a.m.

Someone took Chapman – who had a 2008 arrest for robbery – to Lincoln Hospital, but he was dead on arrival.

He was killed as cops deal with a spike in violent crime in the Bronx, where homicides have jumped 6% to 52 as of June 27. Citywide, there have been 221 murders, an 11% increase.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said he was not worried that the heat wave would bring more crime.

“Sometimes heat causes problems and sometimes it keeps things quiet,” he said. “But we see ourselves as being ready for any contingency.”
