Man arrested in Northwest Austin bank robbery

July 28th, 2018 - Comments Off

AUSTIN, Texas — Officials said Austin police have arrested a man accused of robbing a Northwest Austin bank on Saturday morning, the second such robbery to occur in the area in two days.

Senior police officer Bino Cadenas said authorities were called at 10:19 a.m. to the Wells Fargo in the 13700 block of Research Boulevard near Lake Creek Parkway after employees triggered an alarm activation.

Cadenas said the alleged robber reportedly passed the teller note demanding money and headed out of the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police were able to arrive on scene within four minutes and catch the suspected robber as he was headed out of the bank, according to authorities.

Officials said the suspect was taken into custody and will be booked into the Travis County Jail.

Cadenas said police have not released the suspect’s name yet because of an ongoing investigation, including into a bank robbery that happened on Friday, .

That robbery was reported at 3:41 p.m. at a Chase Bank in the 12800 block of Research Boulevard, about a mile south of Saturday’s robbery.

Cadenas said a robber also passed a note in that incident and left with money. He said no one was in custody, and it is not clear if the same person is responsible for both robberies.

The robbery on Saturday is the 20th bank robbery to occur in Austin this year. Cadenas said the city averages between 20 and 25 robberies a year and noted this is more than normal considering it is only July.
