Woman shot by off-duty Bexar County deputy

June 29th, 2018 - Comments Off

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A woman behaving erratically was critically shot by a Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputy in Medina County late Thursday.

Officials said Friday the woman, in her 50s, was unarmed. The woman who hasn’t been identified, was taken by AirLife to a San Antonio hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Deputy Brandon Doege has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. Criminal charges have not been filed. Doege has been with the sheriff’s office since January 2016.

Medina County Sheriff Randy Brown said Doege was heading home on westbound Highway 90 around 11:45 p.m. Thursday when he saw the woman’s car parked in the middle of the roadway with its hazard lights on.

The deputy, who was in his uniform, turned on red and blue emergency lights in his personal vehicle and pulled over to try to help.

Brown said the deputy and the woman both got out of their cars and the woman began behaving erratically.

“She is very agitated and making threats, and moving around and toward the deputy,” Brown said, adding the woman refused Doege’s orders to show him her hands and Doege called 911 for help.

While he was on the phone, the woman reached behind her back and Doege opened fire, striking her multiple times, Brown said.

“The deputy told her numerous times to show her hands,” Brown said. “At some point, he felt like she had a weapon, and he discharged his weapon.”

Investigators found no weapons on her person or in her car. Brown said investigators will have to examine all the evidence to determine whether the shooting was self defense.

The Medina County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting and is being assisted by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers.
