EL PASO, Texas — El Paso police reportedly arrested a father and son on Thursday in connection with the cold-case death of a man found slain in the Northeast desert nearly two years ago.

Police officials said Friday detectives reportedly arrested Richard Zelonis, 55, and his son, Aaron Anthony Zelonis, 27, on a murder charge.

They are accused in the death of Devon Leatherbury, 26, whose body was found on Aug. 16, 2016, in the desert off the 12700 block of Dyer Street at the edge of Northeast El Paso.

Aaron Zelonis was booked into the El Paso County Jail under a $1 million bond and his father Richard Zelonis was jailed on a $750,000 bond.

Leatherbury’s decomposing body was found in 2016 by a couple riding an all-terrain vehicle on Bowen Ranch property, according to the El Paso County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy reportedly found that Leatherbury was killed by a gunshot wound to the left temple that exited the right side of the head. The death was listed as a homicide.

A motive for the killing and what lead to the arrests of the suspects have not been disclosed by police. Court records show that both men have spent time incarcerated.

Aaron Zelonis,of Canutilo, is listed as registered sex offender in the Texas Department of Public Safety online registry. The registry stated he served more than two years in a juvenile detention facility after being convicted of sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl when he was 16 years old.

El Paso County court records also show Aaron Zelonis has served time on convictions for burglary of a vehicle and credit/debit card abuse.

Meanwhile, jail records show Richard Zelonis, of Central El Paso, has past arrests on charges of credit/debit card abuse and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
