63-year-old mother killed in Butler County hostage situation

TRENTON, Ohio — A 63-year-old mother was killed Thursday in Butler County in an hours-long hostage situation with a man questioned in the shooting death of a woman found dumped in Madison Township.

Authorities were in a Trenton apartment to question James Geran about a woman found shot in the head and dumped in a Madison Township driveway the night before.

When authorities knocked on the apartment door, the 45-year-old suspect reportedly shot at them at least five times, according to Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones.

An officer then returned fire three times and scrambled backward for cover. The SWAT team was called.

Jones said Geran then took his 26-year-old girlfriend, her sister and her mother hostage. Soon, he would let his girlfriend’s sister go.

Almost two hours passed, and more shots were fired at police. Geran eventually told the hostage negotiator he would surrender at 11:45 a.m. He just needed to smoke a cigarette first.

When Geran opened the door, his girlfriend ran out and he quickly shut the door.

As police rushed forward, they heard two gunshots. That’s when the door opened again and Geran came crawling out of the Trenton apartment.

Jones said he had shot himself under the chin, but is expected to survive. Because of his condition, police have not spoken to him yet.

Once inside the apartment, authorities found his girlfriend’s 63-year-old mother dead, shot in the head.

Police believe Geran also shot the woman found discarded near a gun range the night before.

Megan Motter, 27, was found dead by authorities. Jones said she was in business together with Geran.

“Not like where you wear a shirt and tie to work,” he said. “It’s a business of criminal activity.”

The sheriff refused to give more detail about their relationship, citing the ongoing investigation, but said Motter was identified by a tattoo she got in prison.

Jones said Geran remained in the hospital Thursday afternoon. The sheriff said he has not been charged yet but is expected to be.
