TAYLOR, Texas — Taylor police reportedly arrested and charged a 43-year-old Taylor man accused in the shooting of another man on Monday.

Manuel Herrera Jr. has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

A news release said Juan Palacio, 31, was shot in the chest and upper arm, and he was in stable condition Tuesday at Seton Medical Center Williamson in Round Rock.

Palacio reportedly told an officer at the hospital that he had a verbal argument with Herrera on Monday and then later saw him again in the 100 block of Dolan Street in Taylor, the affidavit said.

Palacio said he was standing in the open passenger door of a vehicle and Herrera was sitting in a car behind him when they began arguing again, and Herrera got out of the car with a handgun, police said.

The victim reportedly told police that Herrera walked up to within five feet of him, pointed the gun at him and shot him twice.

Palacio said the driver of the car he was in immediately took him to the hospital. He reportedly told police that he had known Herrera for a long time and knew where he lived in Taylor.

Meanwhile, the affidavit had no details about the argument.

Officers reportedly saw Herrera at 6:54 p.m. Tuesday riding in a car in the 900 block of E. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. When the car stopped, Herrera reportedly ran away but police caught him in Robinson Park at 206 S. Dolan Street.

Police said Herrera had .45 caliber bullets in one of his pockets and suspected methamphetamine. Officers also found a .45 caliber handgun in the car that Herrera had run away from, the release said.

Herrera also was charged with evading arrest, possession of a controlled substance under 1 gram, and felon in possession of a firearm.

He was being held in the Williamson County Jail on Thursday with bail set at $195,000.
