Man shot inside Cleveland church basketball gym

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Authorities said a 31-year-old man was shot late Friday inside an Ohio City church’s basketball gymnasium during a fight over a game-losing turnover.

The shooting reportedly occurred about 10:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul’s Community Church on Franklin Boulevard and West 45th Street. No arrests have been made.

The church rents out their gym to a group that organizes basketball games on Friday nights in order to give area men a place to “do something positive,” according to Antonio Davis, one of the organizers.

Davis said he has been organizing the games for about two years because he grew up playing basketball at churches and he thought it would be a good idea to extend that to adults.

Police said a dispute between teammates who didn’t know each other reportedly broke out during Friday’s game. Someone reportedly stole the ball from the shooter in the game’s final point.

The other team reportedly took the ball down and scored a game-winning lay-up, police said.

The 31-year-old man argued with the shooter about the poor play and insulted him.

The 31-year-old man said he should beat him up in front of his girlfriend and young son, who were at the gym watching the game, Davis said.

Davis said other players stepped in and separated the men. Police said the shooter left the gym with his girlfriend and son, but returned shortly after.

He stood just inside the door and fired two shots at the 31-year-old man, who was on the sidelines. The man was struck in the right side of his buttocks. He was taken to MetroHealth, where he was treated.

Davis said they are going to suspend the game for two weeks, but the church will allow the Friday night game to continue after that.
