2 suspects arrested after downtown San Antonio standoff

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Two suspects were arrested Wednesday evening after they attempted to escape through the ceiling of a downtown motel following an hours long standoff.

San Antonio Police Department spokesman officer Carlos Ortiz said a SWAT team reportedly arrested Jennifer Tran and Steven Brown, both in their 30s, at about 7:30 p.m. in the Travelodge in the 1100 block of South Laredo.

The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force reportedly tried to serve an arrest warrant on Tran, wanted on a robbery charge, and Brown, wanted an aggravated robbery charge, when they barricaded the door with a mattress and refused to come out.

While officers had the motel surrounded, Tran and Brown had gained access to the ceiling and were moving into different rooms.

Ortiz said the two then lit a fire at about 5:30 p.m. in a separate room as a diversion. The San Antonio Fire Department was called to the scene and the fire was quickly extinguished, police said.

Police said officers used tear gas and forced Brown out of the attic. SWAT officers reportedly cornered Tran into the attic at the motel’s carport, and that they had to make a hole in the ceiling to apprehend her.

Ortiz said no one was injured in the incident, .

San Antonio police said Tran was a robbery suspect known to authorities as Asian Jade. On March 31, a man reportedly agreed to meet up with Tran through a dating app on which she used the alias “Asian Jade.”

Her arrest affidavit states Tran took the man up to a room at a motel in the 11000 block of Interstate 10 and shortly after, another man came into the room. Police said the suspects assaulted and choked the victim until he was unconscious.

Meanwhile, Brown was wanted in connection to separate  robbery reported early Monday at the Family Dollar in the 5900 block of Old Pearsall Road where he and a female suspect robbed the store at gunpoint.

Tran is being held without bond in Bexar County Jail due to a parole violation,  jail records show. She is also facing robbery and possession of controlled substance charges.

Brown does not have a bail amount set. He is yet to go in front of a magistrate judge.
