2 boys charged as adults with attempted murder of Cleveland priest

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Two male teens have been charged as adults in the ambush robbery and attempted murder of a priest collecting eggs from his church’s chicken coop in Collinwood neighborhood.

Amin Walker and Jaylen Miller, both 16, were charged with attempted murder, felonious assault, aggravated robbery and other charges in the Dec. 12 attack on the Rev. John Kumse, the pastor at St. Mary’s of the Assumption.

Kenitra Robinson, 18, who was previously charged with attempted murder, was also named in the new indictment.

Three more teens who are accused of helping the teens in their getaway will have their charges remain in juvenile court.

Prosecutors said the 16-year-old boys are both members of the MBK gang.  They saw Kumse walking into a chicken coop behind the church, and hid behind bushes as he walked back towards the church carrying four eggs, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said the boys, armed with pistols, hopped out and demanded the eggs. Kumse turned to run away and one of the boys fired three shots at the fleeing priest, prosecutors said.

Kumse fell to the ground in the church parking lot as the two men were less than 10 feet away. He testified Tuesday that he thought he was going to die.

“I thought ‘this is how it ends,’” Kumse testified.

One of the robbers slipped as he fired a third shot from about 10 feet away. When Kumse realized he wasn’t shot, he got up, continued running and yelled for help, according to police.

The duo ran away when a neighbor came outside and turned on a porch light, and hopped into a stolen van parked in the corner of the church’s parking lot where Robinson and the other two teenagers were waiting, prosecutors said.

The teens were arrested the next day, and investigators found the van on East 150th Street near Lakeshore Boulevard, according to court records.
