Man arrested, woman found dead after Bexar standoff

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — A woman is dead and an injured man in his 60s was arrested following a 24-hour standoff in northwest Bexar County on Wednesday evening.

The standoff reportedly started about 7 p.m. Tuesday at the man’s home in the 9200 block of Saddle Trail.

Deputies with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office mental health unit reportedly tried to serve the man with a mental health warrant and to do a welfare check on the woman, who lived with him.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the man had been having mental health problems and deputies had gotten the warrant in an effort to get him help.

“He was not in a condition to care for himself, much less to care for the elderly lady and her needs,” Salazar said.

The sheriff said the deputies entered the home in the Stage Coach Hills subdivision through the front door and were met with gunfire. They immediately retreated, called for a SWAT team and set up a perimeter around the house.

Negotiators tried for hours to make contact with the man but were unsuccessful. The man then emerged from the house, only to open fire on the deputies once again, Salazar said. The deputies took shelter and no one was hit.

At 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, the man reportedly began firing at Department of Public Safety SWAT troopers, who then took cover and exchanged gunfire with the man.

Salazar said two deputies were injured during an exchange of gunfire. He said troopers periodically fired upon the residence. They then fired flash bang explosives at the home and entered it.

Salazar confirmed that the woman was found dead when Texas DPS troopers piloted a drone to the home. No law enforcement officers were hurt when they entered the home.

Deputies announced at about 8 p.m. that the man had been taken into custody with injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
