2 men admitted to role in Pharr attempted robbery

McALLEN, Texas — The U.S. Attorney’s Office said that two men who didn’t have legal permission to be in the country reportedly admitted to their role in an attempted robbery in Pharr.

Rogelio Acosta-Moctezuma, 39, and Jose Israel Villa-Reyes, 27, both residing in Pharr, reportedly pleaded guilty to federal weapons charges.

The duo reportedly pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiring to interfere with commerce by threats or violence and to carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence before U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez.

The charges reportedly stem from their arrest Feb. 1, 2017 in a parking lot in Pharr during an operation led by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

A confidential informant cooperating with federal agents negotiated the purchase of two kilos of cocaine and three kilos of meth from the duo in exchange for $60,000, according to the U.S. attorney.

Accompanied by an undercover federal agent, the informant reportedly arrived at the meeting location to pick up the drugs but the deal was never consummated because the pair attempted to rob the undercover agent of the $60,000.

Agents reportedly found packages containing Styrofoam and another unknown substance, but no narcotics. They found out that the two never intended to turn over the cocaine and meth after, according to the attorney’s office states.

“Both admitted they went to the meeting with the weapons not to sell drugs but to steal the $60,000,” the release states.

Court records the men each originally faced 10 federal counts ranging from conspiracy to distribute narcotics, to unlawful transport of firearms, to name a few.

Acosta-Moctezuma and Villas-Reyes each pleaded guilty to two counts and in exchange, federal prosecutors agreed to dismiss the remaining eight counts against them at the time of sentencing, court records show.

The men remain in custody pending their sentencing in April.
