2 bystanders injured in West Side shooting

February 3rd, 2018 - Comments »

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Two bystanders, including a 14-year-old boy, were injured when gunfire allegedly broke out late Friday in a West Side neighborhood, prompting an hours-long standoff with SWAT.

Richard Montez, 33, Juan Martinez, 18, and Andres Martinez, 20, were arrested Saturday on a charge of aggravated assault.

SAPD spokesman Officer Doug Greene said the suspects allegedly fired nearly 50 rounds about 11:30 p.m. Friday in the 200 block of St. Christopher Walk.

It wasn’t immediately known whether the two Martinez men are related.

Police said an early report indicated there was one person shooting, but it turned out that was not the case.

“After further investigation, more evidence developed that showed we had three shooters,” Greene said, describing the bullet-ridden scene as “disturbing.”

“It’s a miracle that nobody else was seriously injured or killed,” the spokesman said.

The 14-year-old victim was hit by a stray bullet that went through a window of his home nearby. A University Hospital official said the boy was in critical condition Saturday evening.

The other victim, an adult man whose name and age were not released, was grazed by another stray round as he was driving down the street.

Greene said the three suspects reportedly claimed that they felt threatened by someone in the area, causing them to open fire.

When officers arrived at the scene, the suspects reportedly ran into an apartment and barricaded themselves inside, prompting a SWAT standoff that lasted until 9 a.m. when all three surrendered peacefully, according to police.

Police Chief William McManus said SAPD units had the entire neighborhood locked down within minutes of the standoff and credited the quick response with preventing other injuries.
