Woman fatally shot by SAPD officer at North Side home

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A woman was shot and killed by a San Antonio police officer after an altercation with officers Saturday afternoon

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as Kirsten Kloppe, 43, who was shot in the abdomen at her North Side home as officers attempted to disarm and subdue her.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Kloppe had a history of mental illness.

During a briefing on the shooting, McManus reported Kloppe was taken to University Hospital in critical, but stable condition. San Antonio police later reported on social media that she had died.

Officers responded to the 13600 block of Bluff Circle, in an upscale North Side neighborhood, for a welfare check about 3 p.m. after Kloppe called and reported someone was stalking her and “her computer use was being interfered with,” McManus said.

Officers arrived and found her front door open. McManus said two officers and one cadet went inside and discovered she locked in an upstairs bedroom.

Officers talked to Kloppe through the door and asked if she was armed. She responded no. McManus said officers then forced the door with the intention of performing an emergency detention.

“When they got in the room, she was standing there with a Glock pistol in her hand,” McManus said.

Kloppe allegedly put the gun to her head and officers grabbed her and tried to disarm her. McManus said she was shot during the struggle when the gun began working its way up toward one of the officer’s head.

At that point, an unidentified, six-year female veteran of the force fired a single shot hitting Kloppe in the abdomen, McManus said.

The shooting is the second fatal SAPD officer-involved shooting in a week. The officer has been placed on administrative leave, McManus said. No officers were injured.
