West Amarillo pizzeria employee shot, killed would-be robber

AMARILLO, Texas — A 36-year-old man allegedly trying to rob a west Amarillo pizzeria was fatally shot Tuesday evening by an armed employee and another man was arrested on a murder charge for his alleged involvement in the robbery.

Amarillo Police Department reportedly identified the man killed at La Bella Pizza on Olsen as Clayton Jerrell Morgan.

Ruben Ryel Rios, 29, the alleged accomplice, was arrested and charged under the state’s felony murder rule that allows a person to be charged with murder if they are involved in a felony crime that causes a death.

Officers responded to a robbery call at 10:30 p.m to the restaurant at 3801 Olsen Blvd. where Morgan allegedly walked in through the back door of the business and grabbed an employee by the hood of their sweatshirt.

Police said Morgan, who was carrying a BB or pellet gun manufactured to look like a real gun, allegedly forced the employee to walk toward the front of the business.

Police said an armed employee reportedly confronted Morgan, who then pointed the toy gun at the armed employee. The employee shot Morgan, who was taken to a local hospital where he died.

A police spokesman said the employee is licensed to carry a firearm and he had not been charged with a crime because the shooting was considered justified.

Detectives reportedly found that Rios was also involved in the robbery, and he was arrested at 2:12 a.m. in a car in the parking lot of the Pine Ridge Apartments at 4320 Canyon Drive. He was booked into Potter County jail, where he was held Wednesday in lieu of $500,000 bond.

Amarillo Police Department’s Special Crimes Unit asks anyone with information about the case to call 806-378-9468.
