Garfield Heights man allegedly killed Cleveland ‘known car thief’

November 10th, 2017 - Comments »

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A 45-year-old Garfield Heights man is accused of fatally shooting a man investigators described as a “known car thief” during an argument in Cleveland.

Rudy Thornton Jr.  was arrested Thursday and is charged with aggravated murder in the April 14 killing of Jimmie Jones. He is being held at the Cleveland City Jail and is scheduled to appear Friday in Cleveland Municipal Court.

Police said the shooting happened behind a house on Union Avenue near East 96th Street in Union-Miles neighborhood.

Police said Jones, 52, and another person argued in the street in front of a 1994 Buick Century. A man took out a gun and allegedly shot Jones multiple times. The man then ran through backyards and into a nearby park, police said.

A passerby reportedly called 911 after finding Jones’ body slumped over in the road. Officers found Jones unconscious with a gunshot wound to the back of the neck. He was taken to MetroHealth, where he died two days later.

Authorities reportedly found five bullet casings, a screw driver and a cigar butt near Jones’ body. A cellphone belonging to the Buick’s owner was also found nearby.

Investigators pulled fingerprints from the hood of the car and the driver’s side window for testing.

Investigators also tested the screwdriver for DNA because “the victim is a known car thief, and a screwdriver is the most commonly-used tool in a car theft,” the report says.

Records show Jones has nearly two-dozen felony convictions related to car thefts since 1988.

In 2015, Jones  allegedly broke into a woman’s garage in Shaker Heights and a  police officer reportedly shot him after refusing to comply with a police officer’s orders to drop a screwdriver he was holding.
