2 San Antonio officers critically shot near downtown

June 29th, 2017 - Comments »

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A crime prevention patrol near downtown Thursday reportedly turned into a shootout that left two San Antonio police officers critically wounded and one suspect dead.

Chief William McManus said Thursday evening that one officer who was shot in the face is in “grave, grave condition” and is not expected to survive. The other remains in critical condition but is expected to live.

Around 3:15 p.m., the officers reportedly made direct contact with two suspects on the street near the intersection of Evergreen and Howard.

As soon as the officers stepped out of the vehicle, one suspect allegedly opened fire, striking both of the officers in the face area, officials said.

One officer who was shot in the chin reportedly pulled the other officer out of the line of fire as others responded to the scene.

Officials said one suspect was shot in the head and killed. The other suspect was detained immediately and is currently being interviewed by homicide detectives.

“It happened so fast, one was down, one was in custody immediately. There was no further danger,” McManus said.

“It’s not a good feeling to know two officers were shot during active patrol,” McManus said.

Both the suspects were described as being in their late 20s to early 30s.

Shooting witness Daniel Gonzales said he came to the Tobin Lofts to meet a friend for dinner. One of his acquaintances reportedly captured the video from a loft in the upper floors of the complex.

“People just need to see this is actual. This is real life stuff going on. The worst shouldn’t be against the police,” he said.

The shooting reportedly occurred about a block from where local LGBTQ activists are planning to make a rainbow crosswalk on Saturday using chalk.
