EL PASO, Texas – A 31-year old El Paso man is facing a murder charge in connection with the death of his mother who had been allegedly decapitated in West El Paso last month.

Fernando Alonzo Alarcon was booked into the El Paso County Jail Annex on Thursday after being extradited from Doña Ana County, where he was arrested April 21 after driving away from El Paso.

The body of Graciela Acosta Licon, 62, was found early April 20 in the apartment she shared with her son at the Mesa Place Townhomes, 5450 Suncrest Drive.

Friends reportedly told investigators that Alarcon was verbally and mentally abusive to his mother and had a habit of taking her phone and jewelry, according to a criminal complaint.

Court documents state Acosta’s relatives had not been able to contact her for several days and one of her longtime friends went to check on her after she had missed a dialysis appointment three days before.

At the apartment, Alarcon initially told his mother’s friend that Acosta was asleep and her phone was not working.

The friend told him that she wanted to come inside to check on Acosta, but Alarcon then claimed that his mom wasn’t home and that he hadn’t seen her in four days.

Alarcon reportedly exited the apartment with a gym bag, locked the door and left in a Jeep Liberty as the friend watched, according to documents.

Police were then called to check on Acosta. With the help of apartment management, authorities entered the apartment and found Acosta dead in the upstairs hallway, documents say.

Documents state Acosta had been decapitated and a bloody knife was next to her body. Her was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner’s office.

Officials said a Doña Ana County sheriff’s deputy found Alarcon hours later, after the Jeep had a flat tire in the community of La Mesa, and he was arrested without incident.

Alarcon is being held on a $1 million bond. El Paso County Jail records show he had only one previous arrest: a disorderly conduct charge in 2010.
