LORAIN, Ohio – Reports say a 29-year-old man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly punched a Lorain police officer several times and fought with him on the ground.

Kevin Custis is charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, obstructing official business, crossing the roadway outside a crosswalk and possession of drugs.

Lorain police Sgt. Buddy Sivert said the officer reportedly suffered several scrapes during the brawl that took place on Homewood Drive just south of East 36th Street just before 7 p.m. Sunday.

Sivert said the officer reportedly saw a man jaywalking while he was stopped at a red light on Homewood Drive at Grove Avenue.

The man, identified as Custis, reportedly looked surprised after seeing the officer’s cruiser. He then lowered his baseball cap over his eyes and put the hood of his jacket on his head.

An officer reportedly tried to talk from his cruiser to Custis to explain he jaywalked, but Custis ran through the parking lot of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Parish on Homewood Drive.

The officer then parked at Lorain South Branch Library just west of the church rectory. Custis walked with his shoulders slumped when the officer got to him.

The officer took him to the front of his cruiser and said he needed to talk to him because he walked across the street outside of the crosswalk. Custis repeatedly pulled away from the officer’s grasp.

Custis reportedly ran from the officer after learning he was being detained during the officer’s investigation. The officer then tased Custis, knocking him to the ground.

Custis and the officer reportedly exchanged punches while on the ground. They scuffled for a while before the officer was able to get a good hold of him and call for backup.

Officers reportedly discovered one Percocet pill, three Tramadol pills and three unidentified white pills on Custis when he was arrested. The report says he has two active warrants.
