Man accused of taking urns from a chapel for scrap metal

CINCINNATI, Ohio – A 26-year-old Cincinnati man spend the Valentine’s Day inside a prison after he was arrested for stealing urns at a chapel on West King Drive, according to the reports.

r-old Cincinnati man stole several items from the Hillside Chapel on West King Drive where he was working. His grandmother was a former employee of the chapel. She worked their for more than twenty-five years and quit.

The 26-year-old Cincinnati man was identified as Alan Smith of Harrison. It is believed that he had stolen at least twenty urns. The urns were made of bronze. Some of them are empty but some of them contained human remains, according to the reports.

Cincinnati police say that the suspect also stole an air condition unit, down spouts and copper wiring. Police say that the suspect stole the items and sold them for scrap.

The owner of the business noticed the urns were missing after he found the ashes in their individual plastic bags that were hidden in the shaft. He also said that three of the remains that were discovered in the shaft indicated that they were cremated on the 60’s and 70’s.

The owner of the chapel is still trying to find the missing remains before he will notify the families of the removed remains, according to the reports.

Police investigators say that the urns were at first rejected by the scrap yard. They accepted the urns after the suspect made it look like scrap metals.

NEWS5 reported that the owner of the Hillside Chapel said “What’s the sickest you’ve ever been, and your stomach is rolling the next morning? You get my drift? My stomach’s been rolling ever since I found this.”

Smith was charged of theft, vandalism and damaging a memorial to the dead.  He was booked Wednesday in Hamilton County Jail, according to the reports.
